Dead Island 2 Comes Back From the Dead to Bring You Zombies Coming Back From the Dead

Dead Island 2 seemed to be a game on the brink of death, pretty much ignored by most of the gaming community upon news of its troubled development and quickly forgotten by everyone outside of hardcore fans. I for one was only looking forward to the game due to the involvement of Yager Development, who were behind the criminally underrated (and excellent) Spec Ops: The Line. They proved themselves an ambitious studio with that gem, and I was curious if they would end up doing the same with Dead Island 2. But alas, it was not meant to be, as publisher Deep Silver dropped Yager from development of the zombie sequel. And for a game so deep into creation, that's a pretty troubling sign.

The sequel was originally going to land towards the end of 2015, but of course losing its developer caused the game to go into complete turnaround. Since then we've heard absolutely nothing about the game and, to be honest, I kind of forgot that it even existed. But hey, it apparently still does, as Deep Silver has tasked developer Sumo Digital (known for working on games like Disney Infinity, LittleBigPlanet, and more) with finishing up development on the game -- or, potentially, starting it all over again. It remains to be seen really how much Sumo Digital will use of Yager's original concept, if anything.

Still though, considering the talent over at Yager, it's a bummer we'll never get to see their vision for the game come to fruition. I don't want to be a Negative Nancy (oh who am I kidding, I really do), but I don't think Sumo's take on the game will be nearly as creative. But hey, we'll see. For now, relive the game's big E3 2014 reveal trailer and revel in what could have been (or still could be -- once again, we know nothing about this game at this point.)
