E3 is all about one thing: the games. And this year we got a slew of impressive and downright mind-blowing game demos, including some we can all play right now at our homes. We ranked our favorite games of the show based on what we saw and played, and give you the verdict on what is our most looked forward to games coming within the next twelve months. E3 2016 might have ended, but our hype for some of these titles is just beginning.
16. South Park: The Fractured But Whole
The Fractured But Whole looks almost identical to its previous game, The Stick of Truth. But that doesn't mean much, because if it wasn't broke why fix it? The new games switches fantasy for super heroes, but manages to add in some extra depth to the combat by allowing your characters to move around the field to choose who they want to attack. Also there are more fart jokes this time around.
15. Forza Horizon 3
We like fast cars, the cool Austrailian outback local, four player co-op, and driving really fast in nice looking cars. Did we mention we like fast, hot cars? The gameplay for Forza Horizon 3 looks similar to the other games, but this time it's larger, more gorgeous, and you can race on the beach! How sick is that?
14. Cuphead
Cuphead captured our hearts and our attention last year, and while it's no closer to coming out, the game did manage to add platforming levels to the boss fights. It's still one of the best looking indies we've ever seen, and we have no doubt it'll be terrific, but this game needs to come out. Like now. Like right now. Just finish it Microsoft.
13. Watch Dogs 2
We finally got to see Watch Dogs 2 footage at Ubisoft's press conference, and it seems to be a faster, smarter, deeper experience than the first game. We are really digging the pitch on this game, the new city, the new hacking tools, the gameplay tweaks, the new features to online play, and the new protagonist Marcus. All that it needs now is to deliver, and we'll be there day one, no questions asked.
12. We Happy Few
The other big indie game at Microsoft's showing, We Happy Few is a procedurally generated first person adventure survival game with an absolutely ingenius plot, setting, art style, and conceit for a game. A man wakes up in a retro steampunk '60s English utopia only to find its a dystopia, how can you beat that? That's brilliant, and this game looks amazing.
11. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Call of Duty. In space. That's all you need to know, quite frankly.
10. Battlefield 1
It's Battlefield. In World War 1. That's even more impressive than space combat, honestly.
9. Gears of War 4
We played Gears of War 4 in its multiplayer beta, and it's more of the same. Which is fine, but this single player demo really intrigued us. This is what we are looking forward to, the horror elements, the dynamic weather, the co-op, the destructible environments, the new enemies, the new guns, it's all a treat to behold. And of course more chainsaw guns, that's all we ever wanted in a game. Chainsaws on guns, it's the peanut butter and chocolate of video games.
8. Resident Evil 7
We L-O-V-E Kojima's P.T. (Playable Teaser) which was Silent Hills. That was the blueprint for how you do a modern survival horror game, and unfortunately Konami cancelled the project and fired Kojima. Shame. Anyways, Capcom picked the low hanging fruit and ran with it, rebooting the Resident Evil franchise in a way that doesn't resemble previous efforts at all, while maintaining the integrity of the RE spirit and name. We played the demo, it's a phenomenal tease, and we look forward to this game in VR as well.
7. Ghost Recon: Wildlands
We were not expecting to be so into Ghost Recon: Wildlands as much as we are, but it's an open world tactical action game which focuses on player experimentation and freedom, and four player co-op teamwork. It's more akin to Metal Gear Solid V than any other Ghost Recon games, but we're okay with that. We just want to take down drug lords with our friends soon.
6. For Honor
Are you sick of shooting guns at people in games? Want to really do battle with them the old fashioned way? Well grab your sword and shield and get ready for For Honor, a game where you defend your homeland, your troops, and well...your honor, by engaging in a rock paper scissors fight to the death. This is unlike any game we've seen at E3 and we are enthralled by the direction Ubisoft is taking with this new property.
5. Horizon: Zero Dawn
The jewel in Sony's crown, Horizon is their newest attempt at a smash hit and it looks like it very well could be that. A brand new world to obsess over, one a thousand years in the future where Earth has been overrun by two things: nature, and robots. Who are dinosaurs. So basically it's your job to hunt robot dinosaurs in the apocalypse. This game is the epitome of awesome.
4. Titanfall 2
We don't have to be sold on Titanfall 2, since the first game is arguably the best game this generation. But it's shaping up to be every bit as good as the last game, but with more stuff. Swords, giant mechs wall running, pyrokinesis, grappling hooks, jetpacks, and all the other fun goodies we've come to expect from EA's tour de force. October cannot come soon enough.
3. Dishonored 2
Dishonored 2 didn't need to reinvent the wheel, but it did anyways, and we admire that. A new character, a new city to sneak around in, new powers, time travel, and optional settings for harder difficulty. This is one adventure we are dead set on taking come October, and if you buy it now you get the first game for free. So that's always a sweet deal when it's available to you.
2. God of War
The reboot of God of War looks almost nothing like the previous games. No Greece, no Greek Gods, no chains on Kratos' arms, no screaming at Mount Olympus, no isometric camera, no orbs flying about, and no tragedy to fuel revenge and rage. This was a different feeling game that tackles the Norse mythology, and Kratos being a father. A father with a beard and a magical axe slaying trolls. This was the best surprise from Sony's show and we are dying to find out more about it.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Nintendo streamed so many hours of this game it was impossible not to give it our highest plaudit. It's beautiful, daring, wide open and unafraid. It's pure adventure and exploration and invention, with a completely new design philosophy and systems to boot. The Legend of Zelda has never looked or played like this, and it's deserving of being called our favorite demo of the show. 2017 has a new front runner for most anticipated.
