E3 2016 had a ton of great trailers, and we decided to rank our 16 favorites. There were so many to choose from, this year was a good one! Be sure to check out the rest of the week when we give out more awards for E3, including our favorite demos, moments, surprises, and games!
16. Madden 17
We were happy to see the Madden championships on ESPN during E3, and equally happy to see the newest edition of the game get a very nice looking trailer with some cool new animations and celebrations from the players.
15. Inside
This is the shortest, most minimalistic trailer on the list and yet it's eerie, haunting, beautiful, and captivating. What is this game? Why does it look so good? Good news is we don't have the answers, and won't until the end of the month because that's when Inside is coming out!
14. Sea of Thieves
We usually don't like trailers with footage of people playing the game live, but this one worked because it's an accurate representation of what it would be like playing the game with our friends. Minus the cursing. Since it's a pirate game, you'd expect some at least.
13. Trials of the Blood Dragon
The toy commercial parody was good enough to get this trailer on the list. The '80s faux-cheesy toy fan madness is very nostalgic and this was a wonderfully silly and colorful and wacky trailer to behold. A great surprise during E3.
12. Watch Dogs 2
We really dig the art style of this game, and the editing and music and hacker ascetic blend together to make an energetic, kinetic trailer. We hope the full game can live up to the marketing, because so far a futuristic San Fran looks amazing.
11. South Park: The Fractured But Whole
If you love raunchy, vulgar humor, this game might be for you. South Park is still kicking it decades later, and the games so far have proven to be better than the recent seasons. We look forward to The Fractured But Whole just for the jokes and the comic book satire, which this trailer gives us plenty of.
10. Gwent
A card game. From the Witcher 3. Is a real game now. This trailer is so great, the cosplay, the Gwent players, we just nerded out. Because Gwent is terrific, and this was a rad announcement from Microsoft's press conference.
9. Titanfall 2
This is one of the biggest and best games from E3, and will be of the entire year when all things are said and done. And we got not one but two trailers from EA, a single player centered one, and this one that we liked better. Because let's be honest, it's all about the multiplayer.
8. Resident Evil 7
Maybe the best surprise of all of E3's many reveals, RE7 looks nothing like the previous games and everything we had hoped for. Creepy, quiet, atmospheric, claustrophobic, isolating, and more akin to the modern horror games of late. We were stoked with the demo and with this trailer.
7. Spider-Man
Spider-Man is the best super hero ever and getting a new game from Insomniac Games is the best news we could have heard with our ears, honestly. The last few years of Spidey games have let us down, but here is hoping this will end that trend.
6. Injustice 2
This trailer kicked off E3 early, and it kicks ass. We love super heroes beating the snot out of each other with their powers and moves, and this is the epitome of that, all condensed into one glorious trailer. Super Girl! Gorilla Grodd! Aqua Man even looks dope, he made a shark eat that guy!
5. Halo Wars 2
Halo CG trailers are always top notch, and this Halo Wars 2 one is no different. War is hell, but it has never looked as good as it does under the Halo name, and we got to play it during the show, which is doubly awesome.
4. We Happy Few
This was quite the surprise at Microsoft's show, and this turned out to be the indie darling of E3. A fantastic gameplay trailer made We Happy Few quite the sticking point for many watching the show, and we could not agree more.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Leave it to Nintendo to dedicate their entire E3 presence to one game and still knock it out of the park. The new Zelda looks incredible, and this trailer was our first taste of the new world and graphics. It's drop dead gorgeous, and the hours of gameplay streamed from the E3 floor was enough to wet our appetites. For now. 2017 can't come soon enough.
2. Prey
We were really hoping a reboot of Prey was in the works, and while it's very different than the original pitch of an alien bounty hunter, this psychological thriller set in space looks just as good, if not better. This was a mix between Groundhog Day and Prometheus, with some Twilight Zone thrown in for good measure.
1. Death Stranding
This was the most WTF trailer of E3, and maybe all E3's ever. Kojima Studio's first game is far away, but this teaser featuring Norman Reedus of Walking Dead fame got us talking about Death Stranding all week long. Memes are blowing up about it, we can't figure it out, there are apparently tons of hidden secrets about the game in here, and we are just in awe of it all. The mystery, the intrigue, the weirdness, the baby, it's all beyond our comprehensions and we love it.
